About Us
Overview The Singapore Writers’ Movement ’50 (Angkatan Sasterawan ’50) or better known as Asas ’50 is the first literary association in post-war Malaya. Conceived on the 6 th of August 1950, Asas ’50 is also the first literary association which represented the voice of the community and one which utilized literature to be the ideal thrust towards independence for Malaya in 1957. The association’s manifesto of “Literature for the Community” together with its pioneers; Muhammad Ariff Ahmad (MAS), Kamaluddin Muhammad (Kris Mas), Abdul Wahab Muhammad (Awamil-Sirkam), Abdul Jalil Haji Nor (Merayu Rawan), Munir Ali ( Rosmera), Kumasi Haji Dainuri (Teruna Jaya), Abdul Majid Husain (Hamzah), Masuri Salikun (Masuri S.N), Abu Yamin Kasun, Ahmad Ramli Abdul Karim (Ramlimah), Muhammad Daud and Muhammad Yusof Yaacob (Jim), formed the main shaping force in the development of Modern Malay literature. Since its inception, Asas ’50 has never deviated from its mission. Creative workshops on writing creative works 1. Seminars on teaching methodologies 2. Regional seminar on literature 3. Forum for writers 4. Reading groups 5. Literary performances 6. Publication of fiction and non-fiction works on language, culture, literature and the fine arts 7. Building and conservation of heritage resources Seminars, Workshops and Literary Discussions Asas ’50 has always been active in organizing seminars, workshops, literary discussion and lectures in Singapore. These ranged from the mere participation of local enthusiasts right up to the involvement of regional activists of the Malay literature. These events include; Malay Language Congress, Regional Malay Literati Conference (Pertemuan Sasterawan Nusantara), Southern Dialogue (Dialog Selatan), Malay Literary Dialogue (Dialog Sastera), Malay Writers’ Dialogue (Dialog Penulis), Malay Literary Prize (Hadiah Sastera), The Teaching and Learning of the Malay Language Seminar (Seminar Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Bahasa), The Singapore Writers’ Conference (Pertemuan Penulis Singapura), The Temasik Poetry Conference (Pertemuan Puisi Temasik) and Perkampungan Sastera. Asas ’50 frequently organized workshops and literary discussion sessions by inviting academicians, intellectuals and literary activists to grace and lead these sessions. Recently, Asas ’50 and NLB have collaborated in organizing a Creative Writing Workshop, discussing the techniques and methods of writing poems and short stories.
